One of the projects I am working on is the Farnsworth Communicator from Warehouse 13. Basically it is a two way video/audio communicator. I plan to use a Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone Black, etc.. to send audio and video data over WiFi to a server that can communicate with multiple devices. Similar projects have been tried before but I have not found a working example. I plan to use parts close to exact as possible to the original prop. So even if this does end up becoming a failed endeavor, at least I will have a sweet replica.
Though I am pretty sure a flybox such as this one was used for the original prop I don't think this is the correct one. I may still use this as one of my farnsworths although I am going to keep looking for the original.
On the left here I am pretty certain is the exact part used on the show. The moment I unboxed it I squealed like a girl. The one on the right needs to be painted brown including the indicating mark. I cant find the right knob for the middle. I am still looking but this one will work if I cant find it.
I've gotten dial plates that are authentic from Allied electric or Digikey. Takes some searching.

ReplyDeleteI have not been able to get very far on this project. The problems I have run into are fitting the parts into the 8mm of space below the cover. I believe, hardware wise, I can do it by removing unnecessary terminals from the pi and designing my own rotary switches. my software guy on this project didn't really have any interest and gave up. If you have ideas on the software side I would love to collaborate to get this thing done.
